In today’s learning experience students will be learning about contour and composition. They will be developing their relationship with observing and recording human-made and natural environments. Students will work with cameras and drawings to explore composition and contour in these environments, and begin to discuss their experiences and discoveries with these processes.
Essential Understandings:
Artists observe and record their environment which inspires art.
Artists communicate observations of their environment with composition.

Contour Line
This week students practiced how to find the edge of forms with contour line. Each student had a handout where they used a marker to follow the contour of a playground as Willow demonstrated on the SmartBoard. Students learned how to keep going with their drawing even if they thought they had made a mistake. As well as consider which edges of the form were most important to include in the contour.
Photography
In a search to find interesting compositions of the playground structures, many students showed their curiosity to find new ways to take photographs. Students experimented with taking photos while swinging, and seemed intent on taking a picture when they had reached the highest point on the swing. Students climbed underneath things to take pictures, and put their camera in place they could not fit their bodies into to find new perspectives in their photographs. Some students explored their environment through photography by creating a narrative about taking pictures out a car window while being on a safari in the jungle. All of the students showed excitement and innovation with in their various approaches to photographing the playground.

Observational Drawing
This student only spent a couple minutes with the camera before working patiently on the observational drawing. While other students spent more time with the cameras, this student looked intently through their viewfinder. While some students used their digital images for reference, this student focused more on looking at what was directly in view.
This student did several observational drawings during class time. They used images they took on the camera as a reference to insure accuracy of the framing. Their collection of observational drawings included angles from below objects like the monkey bars and compositions from straight ahead.
Discovery Board
The Discovery Board is a tool to make learning visible in the classroom. When a student's makes a discovery in art class, they write it on a sticky note and place it on their nameplate. This week students shared discoveries like, " I figured out how to zoom on a camera" "I know how to focus a camera now", and " I discovered how to use a marker at different angles to create texture".
